Go West, young man! The Wall Street Journal published a very interesting article on the shift in drug diversion trends within the United States.  DEA has very publicly focused its enforcement efforts on South Florida pill mills as well as other problematic locations in the Eastern United States.  According to information obtained by the Wall Street Journal, it appears that there is a shift in the pharmaceutical drug abuse epidemic to the  Western United States. DEA registrants should take note of this article and review their DEA compliance programs to ensure that robust anti-diversion policies and procedures are in place. It is expected that DEA will beef up its enforcement efforts (if it has not already done so) to address this geographic shift in diversion and will target registrants that that DEA believes are failing to meet their regulatory obligations.
