Around this time last year I wrote an article for Q&B’s Diversity Blog discussing two disturbing trends regarding members of the Armed Forces and specifically veterans.  The increasing suicide rate and abuse of prescription drugs are unfortunate outcomes of the stress that more than 12 years of persistent war has placed on the military.  While these issues are getting more attention, more still needs to be done. The House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, Subcommittee on Health, is holding a hearing on October 10, 2013: Between Peril and Promise: Facing the Dangers of VA’s Skyrocketing Use of Prescription Painkillers to Treat Veterans.   I hope this hearing brings these and similar issues facing our veterans to the forefront and is a catalyst for meaningful solutions to these very important problems.     Image courtesy of Kate Gardiner via The Commons
